Lefteri has such a powerful way of writing. The story is told in such a quiet and unassuming way, yet the themes come across with real power.

The book is about Nisha, although she is missing for most of the book. We learn through her employer, Petra, her boyfriend Yiannis, and Petra’s daughter Aliki, about Nisha.

We learn that she is a mother, and what that means to her. About all that she has loved and lost in her life.

We learn about her relationship with Yiannis and her principles.

The book looks at themes of motherhood, servitude, class, power and all we take for granted.

Quietly, without shouting about it, we see the immense difficulties that some people have to face up to and make choices about. We see how others go through life never having to imagine how people make these choices.

I think this book is even better than the beekeeper of Aleppo. An important book, a must read.
