This is one of those rare books which you know is going to change your life as you read it.
It is about the countless thousands of domestic workers who, for economic reasons, leave their own families and serve other wealthier families in other countries for little thanks or rewards. They are often exploited and ill treated or just ignored and taken for granted. They are invisible in their new worlds and are only noticed when they disappear.
This book, like it’s predecessor, The Beekeeper of Aleppo, is beautifully written by Christy Lefteri who clearly cares deeply about this cause and has the gift of making her readers care too. It is a very sad book but ultimately uplifting too.
I loved the parallels between the cruel capturing of the migrant songbirds and the economic imprisonment of the domestic workers.
This book will make a difference to the lives of its readers - simply beautiful.
