Loved it
The cover of Songbirds was enough to gain my interest. I read this book in a day, I couldn’t put it down, it had me in tears many times, the story told slowly with great detail.
This is the story of Nisha, a maid working for Petra in Cyprus. Nisha has left her own daughter in Sri Lanka to look after Petra’s daughter. It tells a story of her life in Cyprus looking after Aliki.
The book cleverly weaves in details of Nisha’s life with Aliki, Yiannis her boyfriend and her daughter in Sri Lanka. The story unfolds slowly told with beautiful detail told from the viewpoints of Petra and Yiannis giving insights into their lives and how they interacted with Nisha. Yiannis is a poacher, caught up in a world he doesn’t want the story of him brings sadness to the book. Petra has her own sadness and is finding it hard to build a relationship with her daughter
Songbirds hints at the story of migrant workers and their hidden lives. It is thought provoking, beautiful but sad.
