Songbirds is the second book by Christy Lefteri, author of The Beekeeper of Aleppo, and her latest offering is another beautifully written tale. The powerful story of Nisha, an immigrant from Sri Lanka who works as a nanny in Cyprus is told through the eyes of her lover, Yiannis, and her employer, Petra. The narrative pace is quite slow for the first half of the book, as Nisha goes missing and those around her are left confused by her disappearance. The parts of the story relating to Yiannis's trapping of migrating songbirds are brutal and horrific while the parts recounting his relationship with Nisha are tender and heartwrenching. The book highlights a very real issue with the way some immigrants are treated by their employers and society in general, it's a really thought-provoking and and emotional read, I highly recommend it.
