The cover of the book shows a songbird flying free over a town in Cyprus but the story reveals the plight of migrating birds hunted by poachers. This isn't about a Cyprus that we think of as a holiday destination but a country whose systematic use of migrant workers highlights the differences in race and class and poaching is rife.
Nisha, a migrant worker from Sri Lanka, is widowed and left with little income so she goes to Cyprus for a life where she can earn enough to send home to her daughter. When she disappears nobody cares except for her employer, Petra and her lover, Yiannis. The story is told through their eyes and as they search for her their lives are transformed as they realise how much she meant to each of them.
The story was beautifully written and certainly gives you food for thought. The characters are powerful and you grow to love them.
