Spellslinger is my favourite YA fantasy series.

It follows outlawed magic student Kellen, his loyal(ish) squirrel-cat Reichis and his smart-mouthed mentor Ferius. The chosen one he isn't - all the usual tropes are turned on their head. Kellen is hunted by his magical society and uncovers the truth about their plans on his travels through the wider world.

It works. More than works. Most fantasy books centre around one culture and one form of magic, but de Castell's work is like a journey across a vast world. The places Kellen visits are as complex and different from each other as real societies.

'Soulbinder' is the fourth title in the series. I've been waiting for it since I finished the last page of 'Charmcaster'.

There is one heck of a question to answer, one which relates to the wellbeing of my favourite character. Kellen has fought through any number of situations but this time he may be out of his depth.

One of the most highly-anticipated reads of autumn.
