This book instantly became my favourite of the series, there's an emotional depth to this book that the previous books in the series were lacking. By losing Reichis early on in the book we discover more about Kellen's individual personality and if he's capable of being independent or not.
I will admit I missed Ferius in this book, she was mentioned a few times but I really enjoy reading about her witty and sarcastic character, I'm hopeful she makes a reappearance in the rest of the series.
There were some fantastic new characters introduced to the plot in this book, we learnt a lot more about how others deal with their shadowblack too. The children of the Abbey were very interesting characters!
With the added tension and adventure this instalment offered it easily became my favourite book of the series.
