I warmed to this book straight away. Lois is a coder and has accepted a job away from home in a robotic arm facility. It's a lonely life and she's in a bit of a rut and existing on bad food and a new "food" substance called slurry. Enter a menu for spicy soup and sourdough. It's delicious and cooked/delivered by two brothers - who all too quickly leave the US. Before they go though they gift Lois their sourdough starter and it opens a whole new life for her.
Suddenly she's building bread ovens, joining the local Lois club and taking a spot at a new, experimental food market. Meanwhile she's still coding and cracks the problem of robotic arms being able to successfully crack eggs.
Elsewhere others have got their eye on her magical sourdough starter - could this be the key of making slurry the answer to everyone's nutritional future?
The book is a delightful mix of love, science and baking and packed full of characters you can actually identify with. It takes a slightly surreal turn from time to time but ends up exactly where you want it at the finish.
I devoured this in 2 days flat and that says it all really!
