I very much enjoyed this story about discovering what's important in life. It's quirky, funny, downright bizarre and magical at times but full of heart. Lois is a character I could instantly relate to, and I loved her development over the course of the story. She discovers a genuine passion for baking but also finds a community that welcomes her and even some friends. I really loved the mix of characters in the story from the brothers who leave her the starter to the sourdough to the people she meets at the food market. They were quirky and odd but still largely believable and I became truly invested in them.

There's a wonderful mix of food and technology as Lois combines her talents as a software engineer with her love of baking but for me it was the magical elements of the story that really captivated me. The odd things that seem to happen around the starter, the way it reacts to different elements and also the mythology that surrounds it really fascinated me and I loved the way it was revealed in a series of letters over the course of the story.

The story is a little on the slow side at times and I did occasionally find my attention wandering (although mostly to food) but it's a truly unique and captivating read and the writing is brilliant.

I'd definitely recommend to anyone who loves a bit of magical realism and a slow but fascinating story. I probably wouldn't recommend to anyone who's trying not to eat carbs or bread.
