When the first line is something as attention-grabbing as 'I think I might be a murderer', it is hard not to be interested! S.T.A.G.S. (an acronym for 'St Aidan the Great') is set in an exclusive boarding school for the wealthy upper classes, ruled by a set of six pupils known as the Medievals. Our heroine, Greer, transferred to S.T.A.G.S. at the beginning of Sixth Form from her old school as her father was set to travel the world thanks to his job as a cameraman. She is not rich, and her accent is far from posh. Because of this, she is a largely empathetic character and her chatty, conversational narrative voice is enjoyable and easy to read. S.T.A.G.S. is a book written retrospectively, and Geer's comments about how she would've chosen a different path, had she known the consequences, serve to drum up tension and excitement for the narrative ahead. Through her voice, the pages fly by. A tense, thrilling and exciting read.
