I'm attracted by the atmospheric descriptions of landscape in the opening chapter and delicious nuggets of writing such as a fox being described as 'a bright burn of amber in the snow'. Even the name Starve Acre has a haunting quality to it. I like the way the shared grief of Richard and Juliette at the death of their son, Ewan, seems to have manifested itself in different ways. Richard distracting himself with his carefully planned excavations and Juliette shutting herself away. My only reservation is whether the story might turn a little too creepy/scary for me, although I know this will be just the aspect that attracts other readers! OK, so I'm a scaredy cat when it comes to horror.
