I was drawn to the atmospheric opening. The author has chosen a winter-scape and describes the snowy setting in a poetic way. The characters are well-developed even in the early pages as I found myself empathising with the protagonist and wanting to know more about what happened and the circumstances of his bereavement. Starve Acre seems to be a comment on grief and isolation and I am intrigued to read more.
