Bereavement, a depressed couple solitary in the bleak snow capped hills, their dead child haunting the wife, the husband digging for victory. This should be my kind of read, death and ghosts, but i found the characters were too realistic in their depression with a void where their personalities were once.

The description of the stark countryside is good though, i liked the fox too, but it was slow going and i didnt get a grasp of the plot from the 30 pages, the synopsis indicates horror as a feature, but this didnt show in these early pages.

Richard in the back garden digging for a mystery tree is a good start, especially when his mate warned him against digging there, maybe its what killed his Dad? Also the senseless activity phase of grief is a good starter.

Juliette is deep in grief, can barely leave the room, grief is tough, but she sees her recently dead son Ewen all the time, is it real or imaginary? will she rot in that room or recover?

There is promise in this book, but i wouldnt buy it based on the 30 pages, i would like to read further to see if its worth it, but im not sure if this one is a goer.
