Starve Acre tells the story of Richard and Juliette, a couple who have moved with their 5 year old son Ewan, to the Yorkshire Dales. When Ewan dies unexpectedly his parents struggle to cope, with Juliette turning to occultists for guidance.

I found this book easy to read and the author created a haunting and atmospheric setting. The story line follows both the grief that follows such a loss and also the horrors that potentially lie in Starve Acre.

Whilst the narrative gripped me I found that the plot didn’t fully develop and left a lot of unanswered questions. This was perhaps Hurley’s intention, to leave the reader haunted long after the book is finished, however I personally found this frustrating.

Overall an easy and short read with atmospheric description, even if the conclusion felt somewhat disappointing.
