I have never read any of Andrew Michael Hurley's books before and he wasn't an author that was on my radar. However, after reading the blurb I was intrigued to read more. The story is about Richard and Juliette Willoughby, whose son Ewan has suddenly died at the age of 5. Starve Acre, the title, is the name of their isolated house by the moors. The story begins with both Richard and Juliette coping with their grief in very different ways. Juliette seeks the help of occultists, whilst Richard digs in the barren field opposite his home, where he hopes to discover remains of the legendary oak tree that grew there. When Juliette's sister Harrie visits, having become increasingly concerned about her sister's mental health, her arrival sets a chain of events in motion.
I received this book on Tuesday and finished it on Wednesday. I was gripped from the start! As I read so many questions needed to be answered and I sped through the book, desperate to find them. As I finished, even more questions remained! A thought, provoking story which lingers in your mind. I thoroughly enjoyed it and now can't wait to catch up on previous novels of Andrew Michael Hurley's, namely The Lonely and Devils' Day.
