I read The Loney when it was first published and although I did not like it there was something about the author that intrigued me so I read this book and found it a vast improvement on the first.
It is set in the Trough of Bowland in Lancashire and conveys the isolation, vastness and loneliness of this landscape. It concerns family relationships grief, loss and the protagonist's past intermingled with the landscape and folklore of his childhood.
Hurly has a unique and disturbing way of expressing the horror and sinister events that can sometime lie beneath mundane ocurrances I like this and also the way in which the writer incorporates the landscape in the story. This is a disturbing and atmospheric story I enjoyed reading it and intend to future books by this writer but I would not universally recommend it as it may not appeal to everyone.
