This book tells the story of Richard and Juliette Willoughby. Their son Ewan died at just five years old and the couple are having a hard time coming to terms with it. I am not sure if the characters are all mentally unstable or if the book is about the supernatural, but Richard is trying to dig up the roots of an old oak tree which has a lot of folk lore attached to it. While his wife Juliette is so distressed that she doesn't leave the house and believes that Ewan is still residing there in some form. The couple invite a group called the beacons into their home to hopefully restore peace. It is after this that things become very strange.

I think the style of writing in this book is very atmospheric, creating a strong sense of mystery and intrigue, but, I am afraid I didn't really think this book was for me. I was really enjoying it at the beginning but as it went on, and especially towards the end it became rather bizarre and when I reached the end of the last page I was left with a feeling of what was that all about?
