This is a tale about a family which is devastated by the death of a five year old child, Ewan - or is it?
Perhaps it is a story about an ancient tree from which 3 boys were hanged and which has been buried in a field - Starve Acre - where nothing will now grow.

There is a strong sense of madness and violence as well as heart stopping tenderness in this book. It is all narrated beautifully in typical Andrew Hurley fashion with wonderful descriptions of nature and rural life in the Yorkshire dales.

I don’t usually choose to read horror stories or tales about the paranormal but I did enjoy this book. It has left me thinking long after I turned the last page.

The book itself is small in size and short, only 240 double spaced pages, but has a lovely feel to it like a precious gift. The cover shows a large many branched tree with a noose attached and is very sinister.
