Enticing yet Strange
I was excited to read this book as my friend had told me about the author's previous book, The Loney, and was full of praise for it.
Starve Acre starts as a fairly standard tale of a family who have inherited a house and start living in the father's childhood home. There are obviously problems within the family and possibly marriage but these are described in a very low key manner to start with.
Everything changes when the father digs up a relic and takes it back to the house. This is when the story starts to take a stranger turn.
I won't put any more detail down here in case of spoilers. The characters were described well and within the constraints of the story they were believable.
However, I may be a sensitive soul but found some parts of the story particularly gruesome, to the extent that I did not pass on the book to a friend as I felt it may have upset her too.
If you are made of sterner stuff than me and enjoy a different read, this book will probably be for you!
