I loved the black and white atmospheric cover of this book as soon as I saw it. This book is a mix of gothic horror and folklore and was just perfect for Halloween.

I read this book in its entirety in one day as I was so immersed in the story and at under 250 pages it was the perfect sized tale that filled me with apprehension and compelled to know more.

I felt caught up in the grieve of the parents who both deal with the loss of their young son in very different ways, both in near isolation searching for some kind of understanding and meaning to not only his death but to the incidents that occurred before it happened.

The story is told to us through the descriptions of Starve Acre and the surrounding areas, the families difficult history and the mysterious events before and after Ewan’s death.

This book is beautifully creepy, rich in village talk and folklore and is even disturbing at times. It’s an unsettling read but that’s what makes it so compelling.
