I knew I’d love this book from the moment I saw the cover and read the synopsis and I wasn’t disappointed.

This is a modern gothic novel set on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors. It follows the deep grief felt by Richard and Juliette after the death of their young son Ewan. The house and the landscape are as much central characters in this story as Ewan’s parents. The sinister goings on in the house and land over hundreds of years unravel alongside the story of young Ewan’s short life.

Although this book has a gothic undertone it is really a modern story that takes on the feelings you have as a new parent, the expectations, the fear and guilt that maybe you’re not doing things right and how you deal with these in the event of a sudden bereavement.

A really thoughtful and atmospheric book. I would highly recommend.
