Starve Acre is written from the perspective of Richard, the grieving father of his young son Ewan, who dies in mysterious circumstances. Starve Acre refers to the house that the family live in and is a character in its own right.

Before he dies, Ewan engages in uncharacteristically evil and unexplained behaviour and there is a supernatural element to the book and its exploration of this. Whilst Richard tries to take a pragmatic approach to events, his wife Juliette cannot believe Ewan has died and invites a spiritualist group in to the house in an attempt to reconnect with her son. The consequences of this are unexpected and at times bizarre, but the book is well written and captivating until the final page.
