I was eager to read this book, and I was not disappointed. From the very first page the story drew me in, I felt like a voyeur watching the disintegration of Juliette and Richard’s marriage after the death of their son Ewan. Juliette believes that his spirit is still there in Starve Acre, and contacts the Beacons who are a group of people who appear to be harmless occultists. As the reader I felt the overwhelming despair of Juliette wanting to see her son again at any cost, whilst Richard deals with his loss by trying to find the Stythwaite oak an ancient tree in the barren fields surrounding Starve Acre. The author uses such beautiful language to tell his story as he leaves the reader wanting to find out more. I liked the premise of the story and look forward to reading more by this author.
