I really enjoyed 'The Lonely' and 'Devil's Day' by Andrew Michael Hurley so it came as no surprise that this was a winner for me as well.
Hurley's books are great for cold, winter nights by the fire. His writing is so atmospheric; you can feel the world coming from the pages.
'Starve Acre' centres on grieving parents, so the tone is dark and desolate. There is always the notion of 'the other' with Hurley and this book explores this via folklore, ghosts, myth, occult and horror elements.
It's a story about a mother, who believes her son is still 'out there' and a father drifting, unable to communicate and understand his wife. The story complicates when a group of people called 'The Beacons' arrive.

A haunting tale, perfect for a dark, winter's night.
