Latest in this excellent series. I have read each previous book and was anticipating this one with some expectation and also some concern.
As explained in this taster. Karin Müller turned her back on her police career following a particularly harrowing case last time out.
I did wonder how the author could bring the successful elements back together as she had resigned.
The strength of these books are the locations and the historical elements in Germany’s past. The Stasi casts a long shadow over every investigation and has the power to not just close down the case but interfere with Karin’s life and family if she doesn’t defer to them or tow the party line.
Here, in frightening cold temperatures Karen and her team are asked to look into the recent death of a citizen. Attributed to the cold weather, it has possible deeper significance but of course if that is the case the Stasi will not be far behind.
This tension has been key to all Young’s novels. East Germany in 1978 endured inclement weather, frosty relationships but it is the stories envisaged here that the political thaw was possible.
We forget our history and such historical crime thrillers help us understand better. Karin is a great character a loyal and patriotic servant of her country but now a devoted and passionate Mum.
Her story and journey the reader shares makes this book a winner and a must read for fans of police crime mysteries with a twist.
