I've not read any of the previous books in this series and although I really enjoyed this one, I do think that it always gives an extra dimension if you know more about the backstory. I was immediately drawn to the cover of the book, the artwork is very atmospheric and had me hooked and wanting to read it. The language is beautifully descriptive and the writing style, as you would expect of an established author, is accomplished. Set in a 1970s freezing winter in East Germany this fast-paced thriller has much going on. Suspense and intrigue, the main plot and subplots which include a mysterious death. The portrayal of characters is believable and I think you get a real feel for the experiences within the book.
