I did not realise this was part of a series and although it could be read as a standalone, I would have liked to have a bit of background of the characters but thats just a preference I have about reading books in order.
So there is a murder that is solved half way through. The book then follows the villains' in their getaway (which is where the winter of the title comes in). It turns in to a bit of an adventure story.
It captures the atmosphere of the time well and I think the characters are believable. I think this is a well written book. The descriptions of conditions and the place itself were good and detailed.
I would not normally read a book like this as it would not usually grab me but reading the blurb I was interested. Would I read more by this author? I probably would. Others have said this is their roast favourite so I may have a look at the others and make my own mind up.
