I think that if I had read the previous books in the series this would be higher rated, however the brief links back to things I assume are covered in earlier books would make more sense if I had read them all.

Having said that the book is a good read. It is an interesting time period and setting, although I think the terror of the constant surveillance and pressure to report was not fully put across.

Karin is a believable character, under pressure to choose between her family and her career.

The start of the book is slightly slow but the section on the ice is much more gripping.

There is a twist at the end which is setting up for the next book I am sure. Again this twist would have had more impact had I read previous books.

A good read but I did feel slightly lacking for not having read the rest.
