I have read the previous Stasi novels and followed the heroine on her journey. Here we see her two years after the previous novel ended and life has not been kind in some ways.
The writer gives you quite a bit of back story so it doesn't matter if you haven't read the previous novels. I really enjoyed the social and historical details. This is a fascinating time and that aspect of the story is beautifully researched.
Karin is a really great role model when it comes to being a police officer. She is methodical but not afraid to trust her instincts. This case allows us inside the head of other characters, but are they good or bad? The writer teases you in this regard. Karin however is not so successful in her private life. This gives another dimension to the story and her character.
