I've read one of the previous books in the series, which I struggled with, so didn't expect a great deal of this instalment. However, now knowing some of the back story of the main characters, I found this an easier read.
It is a bit of a slow burn though and the first half was a bit plodding, with the storyline time hopping between two periods (as well as numerous references to various back stories).
We're in East Germany and it's really cold - one of the worst winters I memory - cols enough to freeze the sea. A body has been found in the snow. It's being reported locally as a shopper who got lost and died in the snow. As soon as Karin Muller sets eyes on the body she recognises it as a well hated individual and immediately realises why she's been coerced back to work to investigate.
The second half is pacy and takes your breath away but any reader would definitely benefit from reading previous books involving these characters.
