Firstly, I found this book a little hard to get into, I think I was getting a bit confused as to who was who, but a few chapters in and I had it worked out and then the story really took off at a fast pace. Based in 1978 in the DDR, during one of the coldest winters in history, so cold the sea has frozen over, it depicts a hard time for the people who live there one where the Stasi know everything and rule everything.
Karin Muller a police officer with two young children, would rather have the quiet life, but is forced into an investigation of the murder of a young woman. Karin knows that the Stasi is watching her every move and is left with some very difficult choices to make. Ones which may mean even lead her and her family into danger. As the story goes on and a chase across the ice begins, the reader is immersed into the frozen landscape and kept on tenterhooks as to what the outcome is going to be.
I enjoyed reading this book, it is an interesting time in history, one which is spelled out in the book, and the fast paced adventurous story kept me hooked and the last page was reached too quickly!
