The Serious Crimes Department faces its biggest challenge to date and may never be the same again.
Coerced by circumstance back into the Serious Crime Department Major Muller is once again working with Tilsner even though she is not sure that she can trust him ever again. They find themselves back in Rugen investigating a death that once again leads back to the reform school that they had investigated 4 years before. This time however they find themselves trying to investigate the murder without appearing to do so, while working alongside Colonel Jager of the Stasi and trying to fight the rapidly deteriorating weather conditions as well. What they don’t know is that this investigation may well lead to their deaths as their previous work has annoyed senior members of the Party who would only be too glad if their investigation and lives ended in the increasingly severe weather dominated by large snow drifts and the frozen sea around Rugen.
Muller is also fighting her own battle in terms of whether she wants to continue working in the police force while being a single mother and is increasingly finding it difficult to reconcile these commitments.
This is quite a fast paced story probably due to the return of some characters from previous investigations and there is a very different and ominous feel to this book that has not really appeared before in previous books.
