The next instalment in the Karin Müller series was fantastic!
The depth of research David Young puts into his novels allows you you to clearly picture the bare and barren East Germany in the 1970s, making it fairly easy to become engrossed in the ever thickening plot line and feeling right at home.
I’ll have to admit, i was a little wary upon reading the first page and seeing how far back the epilogue was set (30 years prior to the plot line to be exact) and concluded that the plot may become a little confusing at times. However, the more i read, the more i struggled to put it down.
The plot itself was interesting, pulling you in all sorts of directions with different characters. Another aspect i enjoyed was how Karin’s personal life unfolded as the book developed, i thought the ties to childhood and the references to the danger young women faced in the hands of foreign soldiers was important. This book is educational in a subtle yet loud way.
I won’t lie, i am extremely intrigued to see where Karin’s newfound lifestyle leads her in the next instalment, A Darker State!
