Shaun Thompson who also goes by the name MC Growls is trying his best to impress the gorgeous Tanisha at school rapping, acting cool, trying to take her for dates and he thinks the icing on the cake will be to win the "Raptology" competition.
But then a live stream goes disastrously wrong and some embarrassing moments of home life goes viral.
He is the laughing stock of the school and Tanisha will not have anything to do with him.
But when his best friend Shanks gets sick and he feels he can't do the comp a new girl in town called Siobhan helps him through, she gives him courage and the confidence to carry on and maybe he can even help his family along the way to stop them being evicted if he can win the prize money.
Suddenly he sees things clearly, he doesn't need popularity, he doesn't need Tanisha, he just needed the true people around him who loves and cares for him.
Didn't know what to expect from this, the blurb sounded great but as rap isn't my thing being more into rock and metal I wasn't sure if I would enjoy the themes.
But it was a fantastic read, real, deep social issues, peer pressure, fitting in with society finding your true self.
The characters were likeable, it had serious messages but also empathy and humour.
As a debut novel this was outstanding and I'm looking forward to reading more by the author.
