I always thoroughly enjoy books based on true stories from this time period. They leave me both horrified/heartbroken and desperate to read on. I think part of the reason these books can do so well, is because no mind can make up the atrocities that came with the Holocaust. It was a real-life horror story, played out for the world.
The bravery and sacrifices made by people during this time will never fail to astound me. This is what jumps out at me from the premise of this book. I want to know more about what led Stella to this point, and what happens to the love between her and Friedrich.
The first impression left me with my heart in my throat. It was so emotive and raw. I loved the sections where Friedrich compared his life to bigger events in the world.
The cover is both haunting and romantic, perfectly fitting for the storyline.
