`Stella' is a beautifully written novel that tells the story of Friedrich, his early sheltered life in Switzerland where his relationship with his mother becomes strained due to her demands of him. Friedrich moves to Berlin with a desire to see for himself what is happening in the city and to pursue his ambitions to become an artist. He has heard rumours of Jews being transported from the city and wants to find out the truth.
He falls in love with Stella, a model at the art class at which he enrols - a beautiful young woman who holds a very dark secret & who draws him into a dubious friendship with a man who is also not all that he seems. Each chapter is interspersed with a recollection of named Jews who were sent to concentration camps which brings back the horror of what took place during the war.
The story is poignant as the love that develops between Friedrich and Stella can never endure...
