My daughter has been studying the inter-wars years and it's been a part of our household discussions. So my reading of 'Stella' fitted in really nicely. This is a compact book, but it's detailed and well-crafted. I enjoyed spotting how the history was woven around the fictional story and its characters.
I do think some of the fluidity has been perhaps lost in translation, as I found myself pulling out of the story to think about the syntax and overall narrative. Saying this, it wasn't a big thing for me.
The descriptions of Berlin I found interesting, having visited the city a few times, it was engaging reading this historical perspective and of course the events during this time.
The love story between Stella and Friedrich that is the heart of this book worked well on the surface but didn't pull at my heart strings.
An historically interesting read.
