Most of the characters in this story are fictional, but the story is also based on a true story. It is set in Berlin during the second world war when a young inexperienced man leaves his home in Switzerland to learn how to become an artist. He has heard a lot about Berlin and he has been told that it is one of the best places in the world to learn about art. He also knows that Berlin can be a dangerous place especially for Jewish people who live there, but despite the danger, he still goes on his trip as planned.
