This is ultimately a story of falling in love for the first time. However, this is set in Berlin during World War 2. Kristin is beautiful but she is not as she seems. I liked that Friedrich did not give up on Kristin even when her secrets are revealed. Even though he knew they could never stay together he did all he could for her while he could.
I loved how the book was written so simply and with the first page of every chapter giving an overview of the situation with the war for each month that chapter was set in. I also liked how the story covered a calendar year. I thought it was really clever that you did not realise the link between the story and the seemingly random reports dotted throughout the story.
This is a very short book compared to what I usually read (less than 200 pages in total) but it does cover the story beautifully and I would recommend this book to those that enjoy historical fiction set during this time in history.
