As a history graduate who loved studying inter-war Europe, this book was definitely right up my street!

At roughly 200 pages, it’s a short book, but don’t let that fool you. The way in which it is written is so clever and intricate. The ending was definitely a shock, and I did go back and re-read certain paragraphs. Only then did I appreciate the ingenuity.

The novel seamlessly intwines facts with the fiction throughout. Each chapter begins with a paragraph of what is happening around the world. I loved the inclusion of court transcripts from Stella’s real trial.

I do have to say that the prose did feel rather clunky and aloof at times. However, I think this is down to the fact that the book has been translated from German, and some words may have lost their intended meaning.

'Stella’ is a compelling, and interesting novel that sets itself apart from other holocaust literature.
