This book is a translation of the original german version and in some places didn't seem to translate very well so made it very hard going but I stuck with it and am glad in a way that I did. The narrator Friedrich tells the story. He finds himself in Berlin and meets a model called Kristin at an art class. She finds herself in danger when her parents are arrested by the Nazis. This is Germany during WWII and secrets have a habit of being found out. But what is Kristin hiding and does she need Friedrich's help or is she playing him.
Kristin disappears but then arrives again with her head shaven having been tortured, battered and bruised and says she is called Stella and is a Jew. Not a person you want to be in Germany in 1942 and her life is in danger. Friedrich must decide what to do - should he continue to help her and be classed as a Jew lover and have his life put in danger too
