I’m not usually into history novels which entwine fact and fiction, however, this was a good read. There are a number of twists and turns which produce a lot of suspense, which kept me reading. Whilst the book starts of somewhat slow, after a couple of chapters it really picks up and become more engaged with the characters. I thought the mention of the important events that took place during that time added a sense of time and reality.

I almost felt submerged in 1940s Germany and some of the hardships of war. Some of the characters are based on real people, which is explained at the end. However, Wuger does a good job of creating fictional characters that could easily resemble real ones. Wuger demonstrates how many Germans were manipulated to hate the Jews and subsequently how this made life dangerous and difficult for the Jews. Added to this, the snippets of what happened to some Jews adds an uneasy depth to the story.
