What a heartbreaking read the book Stella is. Not surprising I had tears rolling down my face on several occasions. There is so much I want to say about the book but I don’t want to spoil it for future readers. It is set in Berlin during the war. The main character Friedrich is Swiss and begins travelling through Europe to learn how to be an artist. He comes from a wealthy family and lives life without doing a days work. He lives in a hotel and basically money is not an object. He meets Stella at an art class were she is the life model. Their relationship unfolds through the story. Although the book is fiction, it is based on historical facts and has many in the book. There is a twist at the end which I definitely didn’t see coming and to be honest, it has really upset me. The book includes details of atrocities during the Second World War, which although horrific to read, can never be forgotten.
