I was interested in the storyline of Stella as I find that period of history fascinating although of course also harrowing. I had heard of Stella before as a previous book although I have not yet read it.

Talks Würger has written a really engaging story set in an incredibly difficult time. The central character (Friedrich) is definitely very coddled in his rich Swiss upbringing and I found it hard to understand why he would willingly go to Berlin, although of course his innocence perhaps didn’t give him the warning that we have with the benefit of hindsight. I liked how we saw Berlin through his eyes and although the horrors of the final solution are touched upon throughout, there is also much more to the story than deportation.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction. It is sad so perhaps not for a day when things are already a bit much
