This book could easily be read in one sitting as it's only 193 pages long.
It follows Friedrich who is a fictional character, from 1942 when he arrives in Berlin from Switzerland, with dreams of becoming an artist.
When he is at a life drawing class he falls for a beautiful model (Kristin), she teaches him how look after himself in the city and all the dangers it holds.
Kristin, whose real name is Stella Golschlag is a real character who is Jewish but passing as Aryan. Stella worked for the Gestapo, she died in 1994 after jumping out of a window in her apartment.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book, following Friedrich and Kristin/Stella's tortured love story in Berlin during 1942 wartime.
Throughout the book there are witness statements cited which come from proceedings of an indictment in the year 1957. This was from the Criminal Court in Moabit.
Since reading this book I have researched more into Stella Golschlag.
