I came to this book with no in depth knowledge of who it was about.
Whilst the title is “Stella”, I perceived that it was about Friedrich.

And it was.

This book had a huge impact on me. It presented a situation that, as it unfolded, was horrific – as horrific as it must have been to the fictional Friedrich.

It is written in a style I that I am not accustomed to reading. I note that some call it childish but, for me, it highlights Friedrich’s naivety.

I particularly like the news bulletins which highlight a world going about it’s business whilst things are going very wrong in Germany.

The book gave me much food for thought and I have mulled it over before looking for background.

I was aware of “catchers”; I was not aware of Stella Kubler.

The book has been condemned by some critics, one labelling it “Holocaust kitsch”. For me it remains the fictional story of a naïve young man who fell in love with someone that he shouldn’t have. At the same time it serves to remind us that we should never forget.

Thank you to Readers First, Grove Press UK and Takis Wuger for the ARC in return for my honest review.
