Loved the cover of this book which perfectly captures the essence of the story. Even the muted colours reflect the sadness and hopelessness of the romance between Friedrich and Stella.

The love story is set against a backdrop of historical atrocity and suffering for so many. Definitely makes you realise how lucky we are today and how much we have to be thankful for. Without going into detailed descriptions of the horrors that took place, the author provides just enough to make an impact and to enable you to contrast the lives of those directly and indirectly affected by life in wartime Germany.

Friedrich is a naive and unworldly young man taken in by a beautiful woman who is living a secret life that slowly unfolds before him. Despite the growing sense of awareness, I did not expect it to end as it did.

Not a bedtime read but this is a compelling read that once started is difficult to put down.
