I really don't like it when authors do a modern/alternate retelling of a fairytale or folktale, I think it has been overdone and it is unoriginal. When authors do this I think okay, now I want something new and original. That being said I think the authors writing style is good, it is descriptive and it flows really well. The author is very good at writing, but is wasted on a simple fairytale retelling.
