As a child I always wanted to be Cinderella but now I want to be her ugly stepsister!

Jennifer Donnelly has crafted a beautiful story about heartbreak, self-love, courage and feminism. I devoured this book from the instant it fell into my hands.
We all know the story of Cinderella and Jennifer has created a story far more compelling than the original. In Stepsister, we follow the story of Isabelle, one of the ugly stepsisters. We watch her be shunned by society due to her actions against Ella and pick up the pieces of her life in order to find her version of a happy ending.

The characters in the book are refreshing – we are shown strong women who do not need to rely on their looks but rely on their talents instead. Jennifer has created characters that feel relatable, relevant and inspirational. You can emotionally connect with all on every level and you truly feel as if you are walking alongside them.

Many fairy tales show women as pretty little creatures waiting to be rescued by their prince. This retelling shows the strength and beauty of women and what we can achieve if we break down the confines that society imposes upon us.

I truly loved the mix of historical details blending with the myths and legends of old. I hope that there will be a chance for Jennifer to further explore some of these characters in future books as I feel she has created a great basis for this to be a series.
