Before you go into this book you should know, this isn’t a pretty fairytale, everything about this book is not pretty. Everything in this book is dark. The main character, Isabelle – one of Cinderella’s step sisters – is ugly. Her behaviour is ugly, she is ugly and this is an ugly tale.

After the events of the ball in which Cinderella attends without her stepmom and stepsisters knowing, this book opens up with the scene of the two stepsisters trying on the glass slipper. Only, Maman has forced them to do unspeakable things to make sure it fits them, as a result Maman convinces Isabelle to cut off some of her toes to make the glass slipper fit. They are soon found out and as the Prince is about to leave, Cinderella makes an appearance and yay! The glass slipper fits…but you already knew that, didn’t you? You knew that Isabelle, Tavi and Maman were horrible to Cinderella in every way possible, didn’t you? And you knew that Cinderella never did anything wrong…right?

Wrong.

What you didn’t know, is Isabelle’s story after this all happens, how she is cruel and a bully, how she herself gets bullied, how her and Tavi and Maman are left with nothing after a very terrifying event and how Isabelle must find her own path after Chance and Fate try to secure very different outcomes for her. What you didn’t know, is that Cinderella herself had done something which altered each of their lives…not for the good.

The writing in this book is so beautiful, it flowed well and was an easy, fast read. I found myself unable to put this book down once I started and as a result I devoured most of it in one sitting. It was gripping and it had me completely invested.

I loved how this story was written, the plot was so well done and I loved that the good girl turned out to have something terrible. I loved how Isabelle, even though she is the ugly stepsister, found herself in this story, she found herself to be strong, courageous and powerful. Because being beautiful doesn’t always mean you have to be pretty and I love how this story shows that. Isabelle was such a strong lead that I couldn’t help but hope for the best outcome for her.
